Gabriel Kahane

Gabriel Kahane is a singer-songwriter and composer. He has worked with an array of artists spanning the aesthetic gamut, ranging from Phoebe Bridgers, Paul Simon, Sylvan Esso, Andrew Bird, and Sufjan Stevens, to the Danish String Quartet, Attacca Quartet, Caroline Shaw, and Pekka Kuusisto, with whom he plays as the duo Council.

Kahane’s music has been performed widely throughout the U.S. and Europe by ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, BBC Concert Orchestra, and Orchestre National de Lyon. An avid theater artist, Gabriel’s work has been seen at the Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Golden Theater on Broadway.

His discography includes five albums as a singer-songwriter, several orchestral albums, a disc of chamber music, and the recent release of Elevator Songs, a collaborative album with Grammy-winning vocal group Roomful of Teeth.

As a writer, Kahane’s prose has appeared in The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. The recipient of a 2021 Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Kahane relocated in the spring of 2020 to Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his family.
